Another Fire at Plant Owned by Key Ford Supplier Could Impact F-150 Output

Second fire in three months at Novelis plant, which supplies 40% of U.S. auto sheet aluminum, was controlled by midmorning after full evacuation, officials said.

  • On Nov. 20, the Novelis Inc. plant in Oswego County experienced a large, four-alarm fire starting around 8:45 a.m. in the Scriba plant hot mill that spread into the roll shop.
  • An earlier hot-mill blaze had damaged the plant's hot mill and halted heating, while Novelis Inc. ran a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week repair operation hoping to restart next month.
  • Multiple local and mutual-aid fire departments responded, deploying at least four ladder trucks, tanker trucks and hose connections; crews mostly knocked the fire down by 12:20 p.m., stayed until just before 6 p.m., and evacuated everyone safely.
  • Investors pushed shares down when reports of the blaze sent Ford Motor Co. shares down more than 2% on Thursday morning, and Ford spokesperson Ursula Muller said the company is working with Novelis.
  • Novelis said it's too soon to say if Thursday's fire will delay its restart, while Ford plans to recover lost production by increasing F-Series volume by more than 50,000 trucks in 2026, including 45,000 at Dearborn Truck Plant with a new third crew of 1,200 employees.
