13 Arrested in Federal Drug Bust at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles
Authorities said the sweep is part of Operation Free MacArthur Park, which led to 13 arrests and a continuing crackdown on drug trafficking.
On Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration conducted a narcotics sweep at MacArthur Park in the Westlake District, arresting 13 people for drug-related offenses and citing 6 others for lesser violations.
Thursday's sweep continues 'Operation Free MacArthur Park,' a crackdown launched in May to address the area's reputation as an 'open-air drug market' described by federal authorities. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli described the initiative as a sustained effort.
DEA special agent in charge Anthony Chrysanthis and Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman confirmed indefinite law enforcement presence. Chrysanthis stated, "It's not a one-day operation," emphasizing agencies remain committed to removing drugs from the community.
The LAPD clarified on X that the operation targets drug-related criminal activity, not immigration enforcement. Officers deployed a BearCat vehicle to warn those in the park they faced potential detention, search, and arrest.
Authorities aim to reclaim public spaces for residents, with Attorney Essayli hoping the city can rehabilitate the park once criminal activity is removed. The historic Westlake District site remains a priority for long-term safety improvements.
