Suspect in Laiba Ejaz Suicide Case Dies After Being Shot by Accomplices
Police said four gunmen opened fire on the transport team in an apparent bid to free Muhammad Noman, who later died of his injuries.
On Tuesday, Muhammad Nauman, the primary suspect in a scholarship fraud case linked to physics gold medalist Laiba Ijaz's death, died in a hospital after being shot during an attack on his police escort in Islamabad.
Investigators allege Nauman defrauded Ijaz and her family of approximately $34,000 by promising admission to Harvard University, a scholarship, and a United States visa, prompting her to die by suicide earlier this month.
Four armed men on motorcycles opened fire on the police team in an attempt to free Nauman, with an Islamabad police spokesperson stating the suspect was struck by bullets fired by his own accomplices.
Investigators have uncovered a separate fraud case against Nauman in Mansehra and suspect he may have defrauded other victims, planning forensic examination of his mobile phone to identify additional targets.
Authorities have launched search operations to arrest the remaining attackers and their accomplices, though officials have not disclosed whether any funds allegedly obtained from Ijaz's family have been recovered.
