LaGuardia Closes Runway After Sinkhole Discovery, Delaying Flights
Emergency crews shut LaGuardia’s Runway 4/22 after a sinkhole was found, and FlightAware reported about 200 canceled flights.
A sinkhole discovered near Runway 4/22 at LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday morning forced closure of the strip, prompting emergency repairs and travel disruptions across the New York City hub.
The Port Authority identified the sinkhole during a daily inspection around 11 a.m., prompting immediate runway closure while crews work to determine the cause and complete repairs.
FlightAware reported about 200 flights, or 17 per cent of traffic, were cancelled at LaGuardia, with 190 delayed as of Wednesday afternoon; Delta Air Lines accounts for about 40 per cent of flights.
The Federal Aviation Administration is slowing incoming flights due to the sinkhole and forecast storms, as The Port Authority warned "travellers should expect delays and cancellations, particularly with forecast thunderstorms expected later today."
This runway is the same location where an Air Canada jet crashed into emergency vehicles in March, an incident that killed two pilots and now raises questions about the site's safety history.
