Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway to Be Tolled After Inauguration

Minister Umahi says tolling will start immediately upon highway completion to cover N170 billion cost increases from realignments and environmental protections.

  • On Saturday, Dave Umahi, Minister of Works, said the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway will be tolled as soon as it is completed and inaugurated during an inspection tour.
  • Facing N170 billion in overruns, the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project incurred increments from realignment, diversions, shore protection, and removal of refuse dumps up to 15 metres, with no budget increase possible, Umahi said.
  • Umahi said re-measurements are complete and he has gone to the Bureau of Public Procurement, and he will invite the contractor to provide a programme, adding he does not want the road opened permanently for traffic.
  • Under Umahi's timeline, the contractor must begin building infrastructure before the end of April, and Hitech is expected to assume project risk as part of its contribution.
  • As part of the contract package, Umahi emphasised tolling by the contractor and said tolling implementation discussions will start after programme and infrastructure delivery.
