Kremlin says Christmas ceasefire proposed by Ukraine depends on reaching peace deal
The Kremlin insists any Christmas ceasefire must be part of a comprehensive peace deal, rejecting short-term truces that could allow Ukraine to regroup, spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
- On Dec 16, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the Christmas truce proposed by Ukraine depends on reaching a broader peace deal and that `Russia’s position on this issue is well known, consistent, transparent, and understandable to both the American side and the Ukrainian side.`
- Rejecting temporary pauses, Peskov said Moscow argues temporary ceasefires do not resolve the conflict and warned it will not replace broader negotiations with momentary measures.
- On Dec 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy supported an energy-related ceasefire, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged `perhaps the Russian leadership still has at least a drop of human dignity left and will allow people to live in peace at Christmas`, emphasizing Russia's decision depends on whether a ceasefire can be achieved by Christmas.
- Peskov noted Moscow has not seen details of NATO-style security guarantees offered by United States and European officials and has not received the EU leaders' joint statement text.
- Looking ahead, the Kremlin frames peace on its own terms, warning a short-term ceasefire risks allowing Ukraine to replenish resources and prepare for further combat, Peskov said.

Russia rejects Christmas truce with Ukraine as Trump continues push for peace deal
Russia has rejected a Christmas truce put forward by Germany, because it would give Ukraine’s forces a chance to regroup, Vladimir Putin’s spokesman said on Tuesday. “We want peace. We don’t want a truce that would give Ukraine time to rest and prepare to continue the war,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Moscow reiterated its rejection of any ceasefire in Ukraine, according to Russian news agencies, following a call by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the fighting during the Christmas period.
