Kosovo approves troop contribution for Gaza force
Lawmakers approved the deployment in an 89-0 vote, as Kosovo prepares several dozen officers for humanitarian and security duties in Gaza.
- On Friday, Kosovo's Parliament overwhelmingly approved sending security troops to the International Stabilization Force in Gaza in an 89-0 vote, backing a U.S.-backed initiative following last year's Israel and Hamas ceasefire.
- Defense Minister Ejup Maqedonci said Kosovo is transitioning from a "security consumer" reliant on NATO-led peacekeepers to a security provider, aligning its 4,000-person force with NATO standards.
- The contingent includes several dozen officers tasked with humanitarian support and demining duties. The United States assisted with final preparations, including troop vaccinations and visa arrangements.
- Musician Milot Hoxha hailed the decision, noting Kosovo's own history of receiving international assistance makes this contribution meaningful. "I strongly support this decision," he said.
- Albania, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan have pledged participation in the ISF. This deployment marks a milestone for Kosovo, which seeks international recognition despite stalled negotiations with Serbia.
