South Korea Launches Second KSS-III Batch-II Submarine, ROKS Seo Hui
The 3,600-ton attack submarine uses a locally developed lithium-ion battery system and is slated for delivery to the Navy in 2028.
- On Tuesday, South Korea launched the ROKS Seo Hui, its second 3,600-ton Jang Bogo-III Batch-II submarine, at Hanwha Ocean's Okpo shipyard on Geoje Island with approximately 200 officials attending.
- The vessel incorporates 70 domestically produced systems, including a lithium-ion battery plant that extends underwater endurance compared to traditional lead-acid batteries. This indigenous approach strengthens South Korea's competitive edge in the global defense export market.
- Named after a Goryeo Dynasty diplomat, the Seo Hui features enhanced sonar, vertical launch systems, and advanced noise-reduction technologies. It measures 89 meters in length and represents a significant upgrade over earlier 3,000-ton Batch-I submarines.
- "The Seo Hui is a cutting-edge national strategic asset," said Rear Adm. Lee Koo-sung, director general for planning and management at Navy Headquarters. Following sea trials, the submarine is scheduled for delivery to the Navy in 2028.
- Lee Sang-woo, head of DAPA's Nuclear-Powered Submarine Project Group, noted the vessel reinforces combat readiness while establishing a foundation for the advanced defense industry. The program aims to maintain strategic response posture around the Korean Peninsula.
