Knox Mountain arsonist gets 21-month prison sentence
Robert Teal will serve 18 months for arson and three months for assault after setting multiple fires and threatening workers with a slingshot.
- On Monday, Kelowna Provincial Court Justice Andrew Tam sentenced Robert Teal, 49, to 21 months in prison for setting multiple fires at Knox Mountain Park on October 24, 2025.
- Justice Tam noted that Teal was "depressed and suicidal" two months before the incidents, while struggling with substance use that left him "clearly divorced from reality."
- During the incident, Teal pointed a slingshot at a bylaw officer; the assault charge was later reduced to simple assault because his delusions prevented him from recognizing the peace officer.
- After receiving 435 days of pre-sentencing custody credit, Teal has 195 days remaining behind bars and must provide a DNA sample to the National DNA Data Bank of Canada.
- Teal must serve three years of probation upon release with bans on incendiaries and drugs, conditions Justice Tam imposed while highlighting the extreme danger wildfires pose to the Okanagan.
