Kitchener Man Pleads Guilty in U.S. to Hacking Charges: DOJ

Connor Moucka admitted to a 2024 hacking conspiracy that stole billions of customer records and extorted victims for about $2.5 million in cryptocurrency.

  • On Wednesday, Connor Moucka, 26, a Kitchener, Ont., man, pleaded guilty to four counts including computer and wire fraud and aggravated identity theft related to a "widespread computer hacking conspiracy," the Department of Justice said.
  • Following an FBI investigation with assistance from police in Canada, Turkey, Ukraine, Spain and Australia, the Department arrested and extradited Moucka from Canada last year; he initially pleaded not guilty to all charges.
  • The conspiracy compromised more than 165 companies, stealing "sensitive customer records" and causing over $9.5 million in losses, while Moucka extorted approximately $2.5 million in cryptocurrency and personally obtained at least $495,000.
  • Moucka is scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 27 and faces a mandatory minimum penalty of two years in prison for aggravated identity theft and a maximum penalty of 30 years on the remaining counts.
  • Targeted firms included major telecommunications, retail and health care organizations, according to the indictment; in at least one case, the Department noted Moucka used stolen data to "re-extort" victims of the conspiracy.
