King ‘Graciously Accepted’ Invite to Ireland, Irish President Says
The invitation would mark the second state visit by a British monarch to Ireland since independence, following Queen Elizabeth II's 2011 trip.
On Monday, President Catherine Connolly met His Majesty King Charles at Buckingham Palace, where the King "graciously accepted" an invitation to pay a state visit to Ireland.
The meeting marked the first day of Connolly's three-day official visit to England, her first since being elected last November, which includes engagements in London and Leeds.
Earlier Monday, Connolly visited the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith, where she delivered a speech emphasizing the Irish contribution to British society is "as diverse as can be imagined."
Following the meeting, the President expressed she was "upset and worried" about her sister, Margaret Connolly, who was aboard a Gaza flotilla ship intercepted by Israeli forces.
King Charles knows Ireland well and has been a voice for reconciliation, positioning this visit to build on Queen Elizabeth's 2011 state visit and former President Higgins's 2014 visit.
