South Korean Golfer Tom Kim Receives a Military Exemption with a Gold Medal at the Asian Games – WTOP News
Tom Kim shot 6-under 64 to finish at 18-under 262 and became eligible for a mandatory military service exemption.
On Saturday, 24-year-old South Korean golfer Kim Joo-hyung, known as Tom Kim, won the men's golf gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan, securing an exemption from mandatory military service.
Mandatory military service requires South Korean males to serve up to two years before age 28, but the Seoul government grants exemptions to Asian Games gold medalists, requiring only four weeks of basic training.
Kim secured a three-stroke victory after shooting a final-round six-under 64 at the 7,035-yard Kasugai Country Club East Course, finishing at 18-under 262. He celebrated the win with a roar of "Come on!"
While Kim secured individual gold, South Korea finished behind China in the team event, meaning teammate Kim Seong-hyeon missed out on the military exemption.
Some at home question the fairness of the exemption system, created more than 50 years ago, with the South Korean news agency Yonhap calling the policy "outdated.
