Man Gets 8 Years for Fatal Stabbing of Teenager on Surrey Bus
The court gave Kaiden Mintenko credit for pretrial custody, leaving about 3 years and 4 months to serve after the manslaughter ruling.
- On Tuesday, Burnaby man Kaiden Mintenko, now 23, received an eight-year sentence in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster for the 2023 manslaughter of a 17-year-old boy stabbed on a Surrey bus.
- Mintenko attacked the teen on Route 503 in the 9900-block of King George Boulevard, driven by an "entirely false rumour" that the victim was a pedophile, Justice Terry Schultes noted.
- Forensic pathologist Dr. Eric Bol testified a knife was thrust 17 centimetres into the victim's right lung, damaging critical arteries. Schultes noted Mintenko's "cognitive deficit diminished his moral culpability" but said he remains at high risk for future violence.
- With credit for time served at a 1.5 rate, Mintenko faces three years, four months and 18 days remaining. Crown prosecutor Rod Flannigan had argued for 10 to 12 years while defence lawyer Mark Swartz sought six and a half years.
- During trial, Mintenko admitted killing the teen but sobbed to officers, "I didn't want to kill him." The victim's mother described "simply going through the motions of living" to care for other children while awaiting her own death to join her son.
