Killer’s Mum Denies Chicken Slaughter Was ‘Red Flag’
The hearing will examine mental-health warnings, prior violent behaviour and whether earlier intervention could have prevented the killing.
On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a coronial inquest began into the 2020 death of 10-year-old Biddy Porter, killed by a 14-year-old known as XR at a Gunnedah property in rural NSW.
Counsel assisting the coroner, Peggy Dwyer SC, detailed a "very disturbing" diary entry from June 2020 where XR fantasized about killing family and friends, alongside evidence of XR killing chickens on the farm a year prior.
Giving evidence on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, XR's mother testified she did not view the chicken incident as a concern, stating the animals were to be culled anyway. She insisted she was only upset because the teenager lacked permission to slaughter them.
Counsel assisting Peggy Dwyer SC told the court the inquest aims to "prevent this tragedy affecting another family," seeking answers for parents Rebekah Keukenmeester and Dominic Porter regarding systemic failings.
The NSW Supreme Court found XR not criminally responsible due to mental illness in 2021, and following a petition attracting more than 20,000 signatures, the parents successfully campaigned for this inquest.
