Kia Recalls More than 250,000 Vehicles, Fuel Tanks Could Melt
- Kia America, Inc. recalled 250,547 Kia K5 vehicles from 2021-2024, as the NHTSA posted on Nov. 17 that a fuel-tank defect could cause melting.
- The recall traces to a failing purge control system check valve that may let pressurized airflow from the intake manifold into the fuel tank, causing it to expand and contact hot exhaust components.
- Kia dealers will inspect and replace the check valve, inspect fuel tanks and replace damaged ones, and update engine control unit software, with all repairs free for vehicle owners.
- A melted fuel tank could leak, increasing the risk of a fire, and drivers may notice a popping sound, Check Engine Light, or rough running; Kia said 2025 K5 models are not affected.
- Hyundai issued a related recall covering 85,043 vehicles, and NHTSA says VINs will be searchable on NHTSA.gov starting December 1, 2025, while the root cause remains under investigation.
