Lawyers for Key Bridge Collapse Victims Blast Dali Operator for Alleged Cover-up Revealed in Federal Indictment
Families say the charges could help their lawsuit as prosecutors allege the ship lost power twice before the collapse.
The Justice Department charged Singapore-based Synergy Marine with conspiracy and safety violations, alleging the company misled the National Transportation Safety Board through false records related to the Dali's 2024 Key Bridge collapse.
Federal officials claim catastrophic power outages should have been no surprise to Synergy, alleging a ship modification forced the Dali to use the wrong fuel pump, causing it to lose power twice before striking the bridge.
Karthik Nair, a 47-year-old technical superintendent for the company, is also charged individually. The government believes Synergy forged safety inspections and provided false certifications to the NTSB.
Attorneys representing the victims' families hope the indictment strengthens their civil case, scheduled for June 1st, where ship owners invoke maritime law dating to the Titanic disaster to limit liability.
"If the DOJ wouldn't have found what was going on and brought these charges, we would have never seen the purposeful destruction of materials," said Chris Stewart, with attorneys expecting answers in the weeks ahead.
