Chanted ‘Hare Krishna’ Mantra for 9 Days, Says Nepal Tunnel Survivor After Rescue on Krishna Janmashtami
The Nepal Army-led search continued for more trapped workers after rescuers freed two men, including a foreman who survived by chanting the Hare Krishna mantra.
- On Friday, Sept 4, rescuers pulled foreman Sanjay Sah from the Trishuli 3A hydropower project tunnel after he survived nine days trapped underground following the accident.
- Sah remained behind in the control room as others fled the accident, stating his responsibility was to ensure everyone's safety; he urged colleagues to escape before the tunnel blocked.
- Rescued on Krishna Janmashtami, Sah told security personnel he survived by continuously chanting "Hare Krishna" for nine days. His ordeal coincided with the Hindu festival celebrating Lord Krishna's birth.
- Another worker, Kabir Maharjan, was also rescued and airlifted to Nepal Army Hospital in Chhauni, Kathmandu, for treatment of health complications. Security sources reported Sah is in stable condition.
- The Nepal Army-led security command continues search operations at the Trishuli site using specialized equipment. Sah indicated he communicated with three or four others nearby, suggesting more workers remain trapped deeper inside.
