Kentucky to select candidates in high profile races
Massie faces Trump-backed Ed Gallrein after drawing $5.5 million in campaign contributions and criticism over his votes on Trump’s agenda.
On Tuesday, Kentucky voters will head to the polls for closely watched primary races, including a contest between U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Ed Gallrein in the fourth congressional district.
Incumbent Massie has faced pressure from President Donald Trump to step down, prompting his challenge from Gallrein, who criticized Massie's voting record and opposition to Trump's agenda.
Massie's campaign has received more than $5.5 million in contributions, according to Federal Elections Commission filings, while Gallrein has raised $3.1 million in a race drawing national scrutiny.
In the U.S. Senate race, U.S. Rep. Andy Barr and Daniel Cameron, the former attorney general of Kentucky, are competing for the Republican nomination to replace retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
Voters will also nominate representatives for state legislature seats where Republicans hold majorities of 30-7 in the Senate and 80-20 in the House, while Democratic hopefuls Charles Booker and Amy McGrath seek to challenge the party's standing.
