Kelowna's Reign for Highest Unemployment Rate in Canada Continues, Now 9.6 per Cent
Statistics Canada says nearly 14,000 people are unemployed as the city’s jobless rate climbs three points from September.
Statistics Canada reported Kelowna's unemployment rate reached 9.6 per cent, jumping from 9.3 per cent last month, maintaining the city's status as Canada's highest jobless rate.
Kelowna has now held the highest unemployment rate in the country for six months straight, placing the city at the top of national jobless figures for half a year.
Nearly 14,000 people are without work in Kelowna, an increase from approximately 13,300. Following Kelowna, the highest unemployment rates in Canada were Oshawa at 8.9 per cent, London at 8.1, and Hamilton at 7.6.
Kamloops reported an unemployment rate of 4.4 per cent, while Victoria and Nanaimo saw improvement, dropping to 4.8 and 4.9 per cent respectively from their previous 5.3 per cent rate.
Employment increased by 12,000 this month, Statistics Canada noted, following a difficult period that recorded 20,000 jobs lost. The provincial trend contrasts sharply with Kelowna's persistent struggles.
