LAWSUIT FILED ON BEHALF OF CHILD HOSPITALIZED WITH HEMOLYTIC UREMIC SYNDROME IN THE KEBAB SHOP E. COLI OUTBREAK
The complaint says the child required dialysis and blood transfusions after testing confirmed Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, and public health officials linked nine illnesses to the outbreak.
On Friday, May 29, 2026, attorneys William D. Marler and Trevor Quirk filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court against The Kebab Shop and Olympia Foods, seeking damages for a confirmed E. coli O157 infection that hospitalized a child.
Investigators traced the outbreak to contaminated beef kofta manufactured by Olympia Foods on January 6, 2026, and distributed across California, Texas, and Florida, prompting the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service to issue a public health alert on May 24.
As of May 19, nine California residents were infected, including six children, with five hospitalized and two developing hemolytic uremic syndrome . One victim, J.A.K., required intensive care, dialysis, and blood transfusions after consuming the contaminated product in April.
The Kebab Shop voluntarily removed beef kofta from all 55 locations on May 18 and is cooperating with public health officials, though the company declined to comment on the specific legal proceedings.
Attorney Ron Simon stated during a Thursday news conference that this lawsuit is the first of many expected complaints, as his firm represents several affected families seeking unspecified economic and non-economic damages.
