Karnataka Government to Decide on Sugarcane Issues After Central Team’s Visit
Shivakumar said he will first hear growers before talking with factory owners as farmers demand Rs 1,000 more per tonne and threaten a statewide bandh.
On Monday, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar met protesting sugarcane farmers to address their demand for an incentive of Rs 1,000 per tonne, stating, "It is our collective responsibility to protect farmers."
Seeking a purchase price of Rs 4,500 per tonne, growers urged the government to pressure the Centre to raise the Fair and Remunerative Price to Rs 4,450 per tonne.
Shivakumar stated the state accounts for 10 per cent of responsibility for the issue, while the Centre's share is 90 per cent; some factories have failed to pay previously agreed amounts of Rs 250 per tonne.
A Central committee is expected to visit the state on Thursday, October 29, as farmers reject further assurances and insist on concrete decisions from the government.
Comparing regional output, Shivakumar noted Tamil Nadu's sugar production is just around 10% of Karnataka's, while leaders urged the government to plan water management measures for lower rainfall next year.
