Siddaramaiah Steps Down as Karnataka Chief Minister
On Thursday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resigned from his post following instructions from the Congress leadership, formally submitting his resignation after hosting a breakfast meeting for his Cabinet.
The move follows internal party discussions regarding a rotational chief minister formula, which reportedly proposed Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar succeed Siddaramaiah after two and a half years, though Congress never officially confirmed this arrangement.
During the breakfast meeting, Shivakumar sought blessings from the outgoing leader; Siddaramaiah confirmed, "I am making way for a new chief minister," while thanking Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge for their support.
Although Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot departed for Madhya Pradesh late Wednesday, officials confirmed the resignation process remains on track and the state awaits appointment of a successor.
Siddaramaiah rejected offers for a Rajya Sabha seat, stating, "I have two more years as an MLA, I will serve my people," and remains committed to active politics within the state legislature.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's visit to Delhi has further sparked political turmoil within the Congress party. Due to bad weather, his special flight was diverted to Jaipur instead of Delhi. A meeting scheduled for Thursday night has been postponed until Friday morning.
