Justice Department probes TV networks over Trump pool coverage, New York Times reports
The Antitrust Division is examining whether five networks coordinated a brief coverage boycott that could amount to an illegal group boycott under the Sherman Act.
The Justice Department is investigating five networks—ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, and Fox News—over pool coverage of President Donald Trump, the New York Times reported on Saturday.
Networks briefly stopped pool coverage after President Trump banned CNN and Politico from White House events; the pool system shares costs and organizes coverage nationwide.
A Justice Department spokesperson told the New York Times that "Group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act" while the Antitrust Division investigates.
The networks later reinstated coverage of the Republican president while the Antitrust Division determines whether the brief stoppage violated antitrust laws.
Reuters and the New York Times reported the investigation on Saturday, citing six people with knowledge of the Justice Department's action and legal theory.
