Just Eat Confirms New Change for All Customers when Ordering a Takeaway

Customers can order food, groceries and other items through conversational WhatsApp messages, while final payment still takes place in the Just Eat app.

  • On October 1, Just Eat launched an AI-powered ordering service through WhatsApp for UK customers. The feature allows users to place orders for food, groceries, and retail items using conversational messages instead of scrolling through menus.
  • Jörg Gerbig, chief corporate development officer at Just Eat Investor Relations, said: "As convenience becomes ever more important," explaining the company's strategy to meet customers where they already are. WhatsApp ranks among the UK's most popular apps, making it an ideal platform for this expansion.
  • Unlike typical business support chats, this "chat-to-basket" experience lets users customize orders directly within WhatsApp. However, final secure payment must be completed through the Just Eat app to maintain transaction security.
  • The UK launch follows successful trials in Europe, including Spain and the Netherlands. Beyond takeaways, Just Eat's partner network now includes supermarkets and retailers offering groceries, pharmacy items, beauty products, and electronics.
  • Customers can type requests like "find me the best burgers nearby" or "dinner for four people with vegetarian options" for AI-powered recommendations. The service simplifies ordering across Just Eat's network of 100,000 UK partners for everyday needs.
