Juneau Braces for Major Flooding as River Continues to Rise
Officials urged evacuation by 3 p.m. as about 70 Riverview Senior Living residents weighed whether to leave, with floodwaters expected to crest Thursday.
On Thursday, August 13, 2026, Juneau officials urged residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate as glacial outburst flooding from Suicide Basin caused the Mendenhall River to rise toward major flood stage.
Annual flooding stems from Suicide Basin, an ice-dammed bowl on the Mendenhall Glacier where warmer temperatures accelerate ice melt, causing the basin to overflow and send dangerous surges downstream.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers installed HESCO barriers and 43 high-capacity pumps to mitigate damage, while officials continue monitoring the river, which reached moderate flood stage on Wednesday, August 12.
Residents face difficult decisions, with some opting to stay while others utilize the American Red Cross emergency shelter at Floyd Dryden Gymnasium, which accommodates about 75 people.
Juneau's emergency programs manager Ryan O'Shaughnessy emphasized that evacuation advisories must be heeded, noting that glacial lake outburst floods have become more intense in recent years.
