- The Liberal government selected the charity in 2020 for a student volunteer program amid controversy over the Trudeau family's links to the organization, which included paid activities for relatives.
- In its 9-0 ruling Thursday, The Court sent the matter back to the Federal Court, concluding that political oversight of the commissioner was not an adequate alternative to judicial review.
- Chief Justice Richard Wagner, writing for the unanimous court, affirmed that the Constitution guarantees "legality review—that is, review to ensure that an exercise of public power" has not exceeded delegated authority.
