Judge dismisses Alberta man's appeal of court decision for fatal Sicamous collision
Justice Karen Horsman upheld the convictions after finding Rumbles’ erratic driving and alcohol use made the fatal crash inevitable.
On October 16, 2026, Justice Karen Horsman dismissed the appeal of Kent Gordon Rumbles, an Alberta man sentenced to four years in prison for a fatal collision in Sicamous.
The fatal collision occurred on November 6, 2021, on the Bruhn Bridge, where Rumbles' eastbound pickup truck crashed head-on into a vehicle driven by Shaun Stacey Michael of Kamloops, who died at the scene.
Police found Rumbles' blood alcohol concentration "significantly exceeded 80 milligram per cent," roughly three times the legal limit, after he consumed three-quarters of a 750 ml bottle of raspberry vodka while driving.
At trial, Rumbles and witness Dr. Gregory Kline argued he "involuntarily drank the vodka after he unknowingly fell into a state of moderate or severe hypoglycemia," but the court rejected this defense.
Justice Horsman determined the trial judge's factual findings regarding Rumbles' voluntary consumption were sound, finding arguments on "credibility and reversing the burden of proof" failed to establish legal error.
