Jubilant Sykes' Son Pleads Not Guilty to Murder Charge in Grammy-Nominated Vocalist's Killing at Santa Monica Home
He faces one murder count and a deadly-weapon allegation, and prosecutors say an autopsy found the victim was stabbed nearly 70 times.
Micah Sykes pleaded not guilty on Thursday to murdering his father, Grammy-nominated singer Jubilant Sykes, during his arraignment at a Los Angeles County courthouse on August 6, 2026.
Prosecutors allege that on December 8, 2025, Sykes attacked his father inside their Santa Monica home using a dagger, garden shears, and a barbell, inflicting at least 73 stab wounds.
During December bail arguments, prosecutors stated the defendant had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was either under-medicated or not following his doctor's recommendations.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said the tragedy reminds society that older adults remain vulnerable to violence, pledging the Elder Abuse Section will hold those responsible accountable.
A preliminary hearing scheduled for September 2 will determine whether sufficient evidence exists for trial, while Sykes remains jailed without bail pending the proceeding.
