J.T. Poston handles the wind at Memorial for low round of tournament and the lead
J.T. Poston's exceptional putting and adeptness in windy conditions resulted in a 7-under 65, distancing him nine shots from the field average to take the lead.
On Friday, J.T. Poston shot a 7-under 65 at Muirfield Village Golf Club, taking a one-shot lead at the Memorial Tournament after 36 holes at 9-under 135. Known as "The Postman," he navigated gusting winds that reached 17 mph.
Playing in challenging conditions, Poston utilized a new Titleist Left Dash ball designed to combat gusting winds. He gained 4.11 strokes putting and 3.45 on approach, covering 134 feet with 24 putts to distance himself from competitors.
Ryan Gerard trails by one stroke at 8-under after logging a 3-under 69 in the second round, while Sam Burns sits in third place at 6-under. Poston holds a five-stroke lead over the remainder of the field.
Seeking his first win since 2024, Poston plays for $4 million in prize money and a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour. Victory also secures entry into remaining and next year's major championships, critical for his FedExCup standing at 114th.
DataGolf projects Poston has a 31.3% chance of winning the tournament heading into the third round on Saturday. While 2026 has been difficult overall, this performance positions him to achieve the greatest accomplishment of his career.
