Mexican Journalist Hamurabi Huesca Shot Dead
Article 19 said the killing was Mexico’s ninth journalist murder this year, while prosecutors said the attack may have stemmed from a criminal dispute.
On Friday, October 9, 2026, armed attackers killed Hamurabi Huesca Manzano, director of the news site Pinotepa Comunica, in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, while he worked as a taxi driver; three people died in the attack.
Investigators believe the shooting targeted a man known as "El Dario," described by the Oaxaca State Prosecutor's Office as a primary generator of violence on the coast. He died in hospital hours later.
Human rights organization Article 19 identified Huesca as the ninth journalist killed in Mexico this year. The group demanded that prosecutors "treat his journalistic work as a priority" in their investigation.
Authorities confirmed attackers have been "fully identified," though no arrests had been reported as of Saturday, October 10, 2026. Officials have not stated whether Huesca's work as a reporter played any role in the violence.
This incident marks the second journalist killed in Oaxaca in under three months, following Francisco Alejandro Leyva Aguilar's death on July 22, 2026. Reporters Without Borders reports more than 150 media professionals have been killed in Mexico since 1994.
Comunicator Hamurabi Huesca Manzano, director of the news portal Pinotepa Comunica, was murdered yesterday afternoon in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, municipality of the Costa de Oaxaca region, announced the Attorney General's Office (FGE).
This is Hamurabi Huesca Manzano, owner of a news portal with more than 52,000 followers. He was attacked by bullets in the state of Oaxaca, in the south of the country.
