No. 25 Florida Has Quarterback Uncertainty with Philo and Jones that Stems From O-Line Woes
Jon Sumrall said Florida is still evaluating both quarterbacks after Aaron Philo threw two interceptions and was replaced by Tramell Jones Jr.
On Monday, Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall designated the quarterback position as unsettled, placing an 'or' between Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. on the depth chart following a 27-8 loss to Georgia on Saturday.
Sumrall explained Philo earned the start by executing better in practice, yet he lasted only three drives before being benched after throwing two interceptions. Jones replaced him but committed two turnovers in the defeat.
Neither quarterback impressed, as Sumrall stated, 'I don't know that I saw either one of them play well enough for me to go, that's our starter forever moving forward.' Philo finished with 26 yards; Jones threw for 172 yards.
Broader offensive struggles, including drops and poor line play, compounded the situation, while star receiver Vernell Brown III missed his fourth consecutive game due to a knee injury that has sidelined him since last week.
Facing Oklahoma in the Swamp on Saturday, the Gators must resolve the quarterback battle to salvage their 2026 season, with Sumrall committed to starting 'whoever gets Florida the best chance of being successful.
