Jogen Chowdhury, Eminent Indian Painter and Former Rajya Sabha MP, Dies at 87 in Kolkata After Battle with Blood Cancer
The celebrated artist was known for blending mythic imagery with modern styles and for his distinctive line work, according to Art Exposure.
Renowned artist and former Member of Parliament Jogen Chowdhury died at a Kolkata private hospital on Sunday morning, October 25, 2026, at age 87, following a 14-month battle with rare blood cancer.
Born in 1939 in Faridpur, Chowdhury migrated to Kolkata after the Partition, where he studied at the Government College of Art and Craft and developed a distinctive style noted for its unbroken line.
Transitioning into public service in 2014, Chowdhury served as a Rajya Sabha member representing the Trinamool Congress until 2020, while simultaneously mentoring generations of young artists as a professor at Kala Bhavan.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari called Chowdhury a "maestro whose distinctive strokes redefined Indian modern art," noting his departure leaves an "irreparable void" in the state's intellectual and artistic soul.
Before final rites, the artist will be taken to his home in South City and then to Charubasona, a museum he opened in 2019 to house works created throughout his lifetime.
