Jobs, Growth, Workforce Challenges of Cariboo's Mining Sector Discussed in Williams Lake
MABC said B.C.’s mining sector will need 35,000 workers over the next decade as new projects and suppliers add local opportunities.
A luncheon hosted by the Mining Association on Oct. 14 at Chances Signal Point Gaming in Williams Lake brought together industry representatives to discuss mining's economic impact and growth opportunities.
Gibraltar general manager Darren Mawhinney said the mine directly employs 800 people locally, with every 10 on-site jobs supporting another 18 positions in rural and urban communities, including Vancouver.
Mining Suppliers Association chair Jason McCleery said SMS provides technical support to Gibraltar and Mount Polley, while Trekors Metal director Ainsley Wooding highlighted Cariboo Gold and Spanish Mountain Gold as projects offering regional growth.
MABC CEO Michael Goehring argued that lengthy permitting processes discourage investment, while urging greater support for First Nations to build capacity needed to assess mining proposals.
According to an MABC study, mining and smelting support more than 56,000 jobs across the province; the industry must hire 35,000 workers over the next decade to sustain growth.
