JK Rowling Criticises Starmer Over Harriet Harman Women’s Adviser Role
Rowling said the appointment shows Labour still backs cultural elites as Starmer tries to recover after poor local election results.
JK Rowling criticized Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for appointing Baroness Harriet Harman as an adviser on women and girls, blasting the move as reinforcing belief that the Labour Party is for "smug, lanyard-wearing, luxury-belief-espousing cultural elitists."
Starmer turned to established figures like Harman and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown to recover from Labour Party losses in English councils and defeat in Wales during Thursday elections.
Rowling specifically targeted Harman for her 2022 comments stating "women are also women who are trans women," quipping: "You cannot defend what you're afraid to define."
Labour MPs have called on Starmer to go, with Catherine West, who represents Hornsey and Friern Barnet, threatening a leadership contest if cabinet members failed to move against him by Monday.
Dismissing any prospect of returning to support Labour, Rowling added: "Once somebody's proven they're too frightened of being called 'bigot' to defend the most vulnerable, they've shown who they are.
