Jim Henson's Creature Shop opens for tours. Here's what's inside the once-hidden puppet studio
The 80-minute Saturday tours cost $150 and let visitors meet builders, watch demonstrations and see props while most of the workshop stays off-limits.
Jim Henson's Creature Shop in Queens opened its doors to public tours for the first time this year, offering fans 80-minute Saturday experiences for $150 per person.
Founded by legendary creator Jim Henson in the 1960s, the workshop originally operated in Manhattan before relocating multiple times; it has occupied its current Queens location since 2009.
Creative supervisor Jason Weber described the tours as celebrating the 'unsung craftspeople' behind iconic creations; displays include Oscar the Grouch and props from The Dark Crystal.
Senior puppet builder Sierra Schoening, who grew up watching The Labyrinth, Henson's 1986 musical fantasy film, now fashions creations at the shop she once dreamed about.
The shop's portfolio spans the sitcom Dinosaurs, horror film Five Nights at Freddy's, and fantasy film Where the Wild Things Are; the Muppets remain Disney-owned while the workshop continues bespoke production.
