Jewish Group Accuses Ottawa of ‘Double Standard’ in Criticism of Israel
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs accuses the Carney government of applying a double standard by condemning Israel's detention of Palestinians but not human rights abuses by authoritarian regimes such as Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
Prime Minister Mark Carney opposes lecturing countries from afar on human rights, a stance said to apply to Saudi Arabia and Turkey but not to Israel, according to the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs.
Canada joined European countries in a joint statement expressing concern over around 9,000 Palestinians detained by Israel, some including critical cases like doctor Hussam Abu Safiya, who are held without trial or charges.
The joint statement calls on Israel to comply with its Supreme Court ruling by allowing Red Cross access to Palestinian detainees, addressing allegations of inadequate food and medical care.
