Jessica Chastain’s Other Mommy Expected to Beat 2026’s Best Horror Movie Opening
Jessica Chastain plays both roles in the supernatural horror film, which adapts Josh Malerman’s novel and centers on an entity that mimics a child’s mother.
- On Friday, October 9, 2026, the supernatural horror film Other Mommy hits theaters, starring Jessica Chastain as both a mother and the entity mimicking her. The story follows 8-year-old Bela, haunted by a creature from her closet.
- Director Rob Savage adapted the film from Josh Malerman's novel Incidents Around The House. Filmmakers chose the title Other Mommy to reflect Bela's perspective, as she refers to her mother as 'Mommy' rather than 'Mother.'
- Produced by James Wan through his company, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, the film features Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman, and Karen Allen in supporting roles. The adaptation avoids postmodern tropes, instead building constant, low-level dread per Statement 28 and 31.
- The entity harasses the family, demanding to 'go inside her heart' while mimicking the mother per Statement 6. Chastain explained the title choice captures the child's perspective, emphasizing the informal bond between girl and entity.
- Malerman's novel has earned praise for its terrifying storytelling, with Defector Reads planning a dedicated discussion on Tuesday, October 27. The film's trailer has generated attention for featuring one of the all-time intense jump scares.
