JBS Invests in Perry with New Facility, Offering Hope After Tyson Closure
The $135 million investment aims to fill the job gap left by Tyson Foods' plant closure and will produce 130 million pounds of sausage annually, officials said.
On Tuesday, JBS USA broke ground on a state-of-the-art sausage-making facility in Perry, Iowa, with city and state leaders calling the event a turning point for the community.
After last year's Tyson Foods plant closure removed nearly 1,300 jobs in Perry, Iowa, officials said the new JBS plant will help the city recover and bring people back, Perry Mayor Dirk Cavanaugh said.
The plant will produce 130 million pounds of sausage annually, and Rick Foster, president of JBS USA's prepared foods division, said this equals roughly 200 million pounds of pork processed yearly.
Perry Mayor Dirk Cavanaugh said the investment will bring jobs back and boost local businesses, while Zach Nunn, U.S. Representative, is coordinating follow-up with Tyson Foods every 90 days.
The 110-acre site on the southeast side of Perry is expected to be operational in about a year, with a second shift arriving six months later, according to Wesley Batista-Filho.
