- Appointed in 2022 to expand the party's footprint in Purvanchal, Rai served as state president for the Jayant Chaudhary-led Rashtriya Lok Dal , a key partner in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance .
- Speaking to The Indian Express, Rai said he was "upset" with the leadership for supporting the NDA government's every decision, including its "divisive politics" and silence regarding student protests.
- RLD national general secretary Trilok Tyagi declined to comment on the allegations; the party currently holds nine MLAs in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly and won two seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
- With state Assembly elections seven months away, Rai stated he has no immediate plans to join another political party but may launch an organization with like-minded people to address democratic concerns.
