Japan's busiest rail station tests robot bins
The trial will run until late November as the slow-moving devices are tested for safety, convenience and heavier use in a station serving 2.7 million daily passengers.
On September 8, East Japan Railway launched a trial of three automated trash bins at Shinjuku Station, the world's busiest rail hub in Tokyo, Japan, which serves more than 2.7 million passengers daily.
East Japan Railway reduced the number of fixed wastebaskets in recent years for security and cleanliness reasons, with staff manually emptying the remaining bins more than 10 times daily. This heavy workload prompted the search for automated alternatives.
The three robotic bins stand just over one metre tall and move at a cautious 20 centimeters per second, following pre-programmed routes to collect waste before returning autonomously to a collection point when full.
While some passengers appreciate the convenience, the googly-eyed devices have become a hit with tourists who stop to snap photos. "We wanted to test how well something like this can operate," JR East research official Shinya Kawamichi said.
Running until November 20 on the station's first basement-level concourse, the project aims to assess commuter engagement and safe navigation to determine whether mobile bins can effectively support human workers in the always-hectic underground environment.
