Troops of the Japan Self-Defense Forces are participating from this Monday in military exercises in the Philippines along with soldiers from the host country, in annual maneuvers alongside the United States that represent a milestone for Tokyo, which so far had only attended as an observer.
The 2026 Philippine-US "Salaknib" joint army exercise kicked off today at Fort Magsaysay, with more than 7,000 personnel from four countries participating. It is touted as the largest exercise in the country's history, and the Japanese Self-Defense Forces are officially joining for the first time.
