Japan accelerates missile deployment amid rising regional tensions

Japan announced on August 29, 2025, it will accelerate deployment of domestically developed long-range missiles, aiming for completion by March 2026.
This decision follows Japan's 2022 five-year security strategy naming China as its biggest challenge and signaling a shift from its pacifist post-World War II policy.
The move includes hosting the U.S. Army's first deployment of the Typhon mid-range missile system in Japan during the annual Resolute Dragon exercise from September 11 to 25, 2025.
Typhon is capable of launching Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of 1,000 miles as well as Standard Missile-6s that reach up to 290 miles, while the upcoming exercise will include nearly 1,900 American and over 12,000 Japanese troops to improve joint operational readiness.
These developments strengthen Japan's military capabilities and its alliance with the U.S. amid regional tensions from China's naval activities and threats posed by North Korea and Russia.
