Trans School Bus Driver Alleges Human Rights Breach Over Pink Skirt
The tribunal has not ruled on the complaint, which alleges discrimination based on gender identity, sex and ethnic origin after the driver was removed from school routes.
- L.Z., a former school bus driver, filed a human rights complaint against the York Catholic District School Board and Landmark Bus Lines, alleging discrimination with respect to employment because of gender identity and sex.
- The complaint stems from the driver's June 2025 removal after parents confronted L.Z. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Elementary School for wearing a schoolgirl uniform and labeling the bus 'Lolita Line,' referencing Vladimir Nabokov's 1955 novel.
- On October 13, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario granted L.Z. an anonymity order, concluding that the driver's privacy concerns regarding safety and 'discriminatory labels due to transphobic stereotypes' outweighed the public interest in a transparent process.
- The York Catholic District School Board removed the driver from all routes, stating it had followed 'all of its child protection procedures' and that bus drivers working with vulnerable children must pass a vulnerable sector check with local police.
- No hearing date has been scheduled and the case remains ongoing before the tribunal, which possesses authority to award damages for lost wages, order reinstatement, or mandate policy changes if it rules in L.Z.'s favor.
