IU Demands Interior Ministry Resignations Over Police Report Linking Morocco to Ceuta Migrant Influx
The interior ministry wants police to verify whether a government agency said Moroccan security forces guided the entry of more than 70,000 migrants.
- On Wednesday, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska ordered police to verify a report from the National Centre for Immigration and Borders alleging Moroccan security forces guided July's mass migrant influx into Ceuta.
- More than 70,000 migrants entered the small Spanish territory on July 30-31, swimming or crossing on foot from neighboring Morocco in an unprecedented rush that left scores dead.
- CENIF claimed the incident "was guided by Moroccan security forces...with an objective other than migration," prompting the minister to demand such information be reported to the National Security Council.
- Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez denied Moroccan involvement, telling Cadena SER radio that "no intelligence service" had suggested such involvement, while pledging €168 million in aid for Ceuta.
- Spain requested support from the European Commission and Frontex to process migrants as the crisis strained the Schengen free-travel zone; both governments announced a 15-day extension of border checks on Monday.
