About 85% of Category 3 or higher hurricanes originate near the Cape Verde Islands, influenced by Atlantic warm waters and atmospheric conditions, the National Hurricane Center said.

- Several infamous hurricanes began as Cape Verde storms, and about 85% of major hurricanes start this way, including historic storms Donna, Hugo, Andrew, Ivan, Ike, Irma, Florence, the 1900 Galveston Hurricane, and the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane.
- Fewer than one in 10 of these storms hit the U.S., and because they take at least 10 days to cross the Atlantic, they receive extensive media and forecasting attention.
- In recent years, scientists have found Saharan dry air and dust can reduce the humidity hurricanes need and settle on the U.S. East Coast, complicating forecasting due to atmospheric complexity.
