Dozens of Pilot Whales Stranded on New Zealand Coast
On Thursday, the Department of Conservation reported nearly 50 pilot whales stranded along the rugged Ngawi coastline near Cape Palliser on New Zealand's North Island.
DOC staff, local Maori volunteers, and marine medics from Project Jonah worked to keep surviving whales cool and hydrated using buckets of water and towels during rescue efforts.
Most of the pod succumbed to their injuries, with local resident Rob Bargh telling Radio New Zealand that survivors were on their 'last breaths'.
By Thursday evening, the final four surviving whales had died, including two that rescuers had successfully refloated during high tide.
While strandings are common in New Zealand and Australia due to large pilot whale populations, DOC noted this area had not recorded a mass event since the 1990s.
On the coast of the North Island of New Zealand, more than a dozen white-throated dolphins have become stranded. Most have died, and rescuers are trying to return the survivors to the sea.
