Minnesota Zoo Welcomes New Baby Buffalo Calf
The calf will be named in a community contest as city staff continue a decades-long tradition of caring for the buffalo pair.
Sunnybrook Zoo in Wadena welcomed a female buffalo calf on May 20, 2026, the first female born at the city zoo in more than 10 years, according to Wadena public works director Dan Kovar.
Established in 1958 by Harry Merickel and Rich Stuntebeck at 210 Harry Rich Drive, Sunnybrook Park fulfills their vision by featuring buffaloes; parents Sam and Sally arrived from Wally McManigle's Blue Grass Bison Ranch in Sebeka.
City employee Dusty Denny noted the pair maintain a comical dynamic, saying "Sam is kind of a pig and sometimes steals Sally's food," while caring for the buffaloes remains a community effort involving public works staff and campground hosts.
By tradition, a community contest will determine the calf's official name, making the new arrival a special addition to Wadena's beloved attractions and drawing continued interest to the zoo.
In the fall, after the snow falls and the calf is fully weaned, she will be transferred to McManigle's farm to join the rest of the herd, continuing the park's long-standing tradition.
