The rapid military gains of the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have allowed them to establish themselves right next to the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, giving them the ability to threaten shipping between the Indian Ocean and Europe.
Yemen's Houthi rebels have also begun to significantly impact the global fuel crisis. They have taken control of the Bab el Mandeb Strait between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, forcing shipping companies to abandon the Suez Canal, which has carried nearly 12 percent of the world's trade.
