Italy bans lab-grown meat in nod to farmers
Italy's lower house has approved a ban on the production and sale of lab-grown meat, making it the first EU nation to do so. The ban aims to protect the country's livestock industry and address health concerns.
The law also prohibits the use of meat-related words on labels for plant-based protein products. However, critics argue that lab-grown meat is not synthetic and is created using natural cells without genetic modification.
The ban is a victory for Italy's agriculture minister and came in response to a petition organized by the Coldiretti lobby group. The minister praises the law for preserving the relationship between food, land, and labor.
Italy banned synthetic foods and established strong sanctions for those who fail to comply with the ban, with fines ranging from 10,000 to 60,000 euros, or 10% of turnover in the case of incomes above 60,000 euros
