Italian Chef Fired From Queensland Restaurant for Refusing to Put Pineapple on Pizza

The Fair Work Commission said the chef filed his unfair dismissal claim after the 21-day deadline expired.

  • On Tuesday, Commissioner Jennifer Hunt dismissed Chef Davide Tamburella's unfair dismissal claim against La Costa Restaurant. The Fair Work Commission ruled the application invalid because it was filed after the 21-day statutory period expired.
  • La Costa Restaurant dismissed Tamburella in May after he refused to add pineapple to a pizza. He stated that putting the fruit on pizza is an "insult to his culture," marking his third refusal in four years.
  • Managing Director Elliot Ingram told the Daily Mail there was "more to this story than a pizza topping." He cited "performance concerns" including foul language and "escalation of frustration in the workplace."
  • Tamburella has since become head chef at Don Gino in West End, according to his LinkedIn profile. A BBC check confirmed that pineapple is not currently on that restaurant's menu.
  • A 2017 YouGov poll found about 53 per cent of people liked pineapple on their pizza, despite purists viewing it as a violation of tradition. Greek-born Canadian Sam Panopoulos invented the dish in Ontario.
